what we do

The goal of our center is to have a place where philanthropist, advocates, organizations and family and friends of patients with a Neurological illness could donate monetary funds which can support Investigator initiated clinical trials. By having funds, we could optimize proper treatments in order to improve outcomes for patients with neurological diseases.
Causes of Neuropathy
Peripheral
neuropathy may be hereditary or it may be an acquired disease. There are
many causes of peripheral neuropathy. The first step in trying to treat
a patient’s peripheral neuropathy is to identify the cause.
This is done by means of a thorough general and neurological examination.
If there are symptoms to suggest a peripheral neuropathy then EMG/ Nerve
Conduction Studies can be ordered. These tests allow a physician to study
how a patient’s nerves are conducting electricity. Once a neuropathy
is confirmed, a physician will usually order a number of
blood tests to look for a specific cause. If these tests are unrevealing
then some patients will undergo a nerve biopsy which can reveal a cause
for their peripheral neuropathy in a number of cases.
Small fiber neuropathies can be caused by disorders of metabolism such as diabetes, chronic infections (such as human immunodeficiency virus), genetic abnormalities, toxicity from various drugs, and autoimmune diseases. The cause, however, often remains a mystery. As more research has been developed over the past couple of years, it has become clear that impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a frequent cause for small fiber neuropathies. Small fiber neuropathy is usually diagnosed by a test called a skin biopsy where the number of nerve fibers in the surface level of skin is measured.
Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an auto-immune disease in which the lining around nerve cells is damaged. As a result, the affected nerves fail to respond, or respond only weakly, causing numbness, tingling, pain, progressive muscle weakness.
